On the surface, the trophy is going back to Australia. But look again. The real winner of this year’s Constellation Cup isn’t just the Australian Diamonds, it’s the system behind them - the Suncorp Super Netball.

In the deciding moment of added time in Game 4 in Christchurch, when scores were locked at 11 goals each and the clock was winding down, Australia slid into a rhythm we’ve seen repeatedly at domestic level. They ran the clock, controlled tempo, waited patiently for an opening, and only when there were a few seconds left, they took it. By doing so, the Diamonds denied the New Zealand Silver Ferns any opportunity to score, closing out the Series.

The quality of the SSN, the intensity, and volume of high-pressure finishes all contribute to producing players comfortable in those “14-minute added-time” type moments. For example, the 2025 SSN Grand Final concluded with a 59–58 win by the Melbourne Vixens - many of whom were the same attacking players on court this evening in those final few seconds in Christchurch. Back in Melbourne at the SSN Grand Final, they played the ball for a minute, keeping their noses just one goal in front when it mattered.

When you look at how Australia closed the series: in Game 4 they controlled possession, made the simple plays at the right time, and when fatigue and pressure mounted, they weren’t seeking heroics, they were executing. That is exactly what happens week in, week out in the SSN: players learning how to execute under pressure, knowing when to push for the goal, when to reset, and when to slow the pace.

This isn’t to diminish New Zealand’s effort. They showed resilience, especially in both the final two regular games. But the pattern across the series tells the story: Australia knew how to close the deal because they’ve been doing those things in the SSN all season.

Looking ahead to future trans-Tasman meetings, some would pit the 2026 Commonwealth Games gold medal match in Glasgow as a potential next meeting.

While Grace Nweke was the only Silver Fern in the SSN last season, next season a raft of players will cross the ditch to ply their trade in the Aussie domestic league. The Silver Ferns will play in these fiery contests week after week - a cadence that will surely elevate their tactics in when back in the black dress.

Next time these two juggernauts meet and scores come down to the wire in a high-pressure game, could the outcome be very different? Only time will tell. For now though, the SSN can take a quiet bow.
